Extracted, powderful, impressive
The province of Benevento (also the name of the city) in Campania is home to Fontanavecchia. It is a landlocked place northeast of Naples, where vines have long been cultivated. Fontanavecchia was established in the early 1900s by the Rillo family, who continue to manage it.
Made from the Aglianico grape, which has DOCGs in Taurasi (in the province of Avellino) and Aglianico del Talburno (in Benevento, which was designated in 2011) this succulent red was aged 18 months French oak barrique. Cherry liqueur and brown spices, cocoa and leather with plummy undertones on the nose translate to an intense wine, brooding and extracted. Salted licorice, cherries, vanilla and chocolate flavours dominate. Notable acidity keeps it fresh, it has a smooth texture, impressive posture and firm tannins.
